You can see your social programme calendar here or log onto our e-learning and community site (its a bit like facebook but just for UIC students) for more information about the school, activities to practice your English anytime - don't forget you can also access the e-learning site after you have finished your course.
Access is available for UIC London students and graduates and you will receive your username and password when you register with us. If you have a username, please log in. Otherwise, please contact Reception.
There are always areas where you might need more information during your stay - we find the most the most common are:
Transport (transport for London) In London travelling by public transport is easy and safe. There are several tube lines which take you from the centre of London (near the school) to almost everywhere. The tubes generally run from around 6am until midnight. Buses run very frequently and are generally cheaper then the tubes.
Insurance We strongly recommend you have your own insurance to cover any accidents or health related issues. If you are an EU citizen you can probably arrange this before you leave home but otherwise you should have medical insurance. We cannot sell you medical insurance but and direct you to a good company.
Working If you are from an EU or EAA country you can generally work with no restrictions. Otherwise you are not allowed to work unless you have a specific permission to do so. If you are not sure do please ask us - you'll need to bring your passport so we can identify the stamps in it for you.
Visas The situation with visas is quite complicated. From the EU or EAA you do not need a visa. Otherwise the safest route to follow is to assume you do need a visa. If you come form some countries you can get this in the UK when you arrive, for others you might need to get one before you leave your home country. If you are in any doubt please check with us first - by email or call or talk to one of our representatives in your own country.
Bank Accounts We can help you to open a bank account - but only if you make all the arrangements before you leave home. This way you will be able to just start using the account when you arrive in the UK.
Dealing with problems If you have any problems in the school please talk to us. Of course we hope you don't have any problems but sometimes things might not be just the way you think they should be. We often find little problems can be easily solved - sometimes it can be a matter of not understanding how things work. We do take a lot of time and trouble to get the school right and regularly ask for your feedback to make it even better, but sometimes we might need your help.
If you have a problem with your class please speak to your teacher first. If you don't want to then you can always speak to Wendy - the Director of Studies. Her office is on the 4th floor. If that doesn't work you can speak to Claire, the Principal who is in the office on the 2nd floor or to David (the Director and owner of UIC).
If you have a problem about the school which we can't solve you can always talk to English UK, our professional association. You can download our full complaints policy here.
Health and Safety We take our responsibilities with Health and Safety very seriously, we want you and also all the people who work for us to be safe. We have regular fire alarm tests, electrical tests, and risk assessments, both for normal things inside the school and also for when we take you out on social programmes or other activities. We try to reduce the risk of anything going wrong or there being any problems whenever we can. You can download our full Health & Safety Policy here.
