I was born and brought up in London so teaching in this wonderful city is a joy for me. Students like to hear my tips about what to do in London and the best places to eat fish and chips! I love travelling, learning about different cultures and other languages. I have also lived abroad so know what it's like to live away from friends and family. Students tell me that I inspire and motivate them to learn English and this is what I love most about teaching.

For as long as I can remember I've always been interested in foreign things; foreign art, foreign food, foreign geography, culture and people. So naturally, I always wanted to learn foreign languages, maybe they would help to meet all these interesting foreign people. I learned French at school and became a French teacher. Then I thought, 'well, it would be nice to live abroad for a few years and teach adults'. So the answer was to become an English teacher. And I've been talking to interesting foreign people ever since.

I am the Director of Studies at UIC and I have been here for three years. What I love about our school is the friendly, welcoming atmosphere of the place, both among the teachers and administration staff and among the students themselves. It really is a fantastic place to work and study and the whole of the 'West End' is on your doorstep!
My job is to help and advise students on their English progress and English language courses at UIC, so if you ever have any questions about your learning, just pop up to see me. I am more than happy to help!
Another important part of my job is to assist and support our excellent teachers to be the best that they can and to love what they do. The best thing about learning a foreign language in London is that you have many opportunities to practise it. We always tell students that in order to learn faster, they need to be in touch with the language as much as possible and practise with friends, watch films, read, travel, go to exhibitions and to the theatre. Learning a foreign language takes time... but it's worth the effort!

uiWhat's struck me the most about UIC, since joining in June 2011, is how enthusiastic the students are about the college and how much they seem to enjoy all aspects of their time here - being in the centre of London, meeting other students from different countries (which forces them to practice their English!) and making the most of the full social programme on offer. Before I started teaching, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it. However, as soon as I started teaching, I found it amazing! I really enjoy the feeling when the students prove that they are learning in my lessons. I'm especially interested in teaching vocabulary - it's great when your students understand the new concepts and start using the language correctly. I think it's really important to teach language with fun games, which helps them remember the vocab. After a couple of days, most students will have remembered the words, and be able to use them confidently.
Teaching at UIC has been great! There's a lovely learning environment.

I'm from Besançon, in France, but I lived in Manchester, then Paris for a few years and have now settled in London. I started teaching because I needed a part time job to finance my studies in English literature, then French linguistics. That was ten years ago, I am still teaching today because I find this job most fulfilling, fun and rewarding.
