Japan has long been the economic powerhouse of the world and although those days may be coming to an end there is still an enormous amount of business done with Japan and still a huge advantage to be gained by anyone who knows some Japanese. Japan has so many faces – the imperial history, the geisha and the samurai, the art and fashion and the modern world of neon, electronics and bullet trains, not to mention the beautiful and sometimes astonishing countryside. As in all countries there is also a more hidden side to Japan and it is only by visiting and spending a little time there that you can really get a glimpse of that. As with all the languages we teach students come to us for all sorts of reasons - business, travel or the culture and those planning to visit Japan can only benefit from taking a language course.
Most people who join our classes in our Language School simply want to know how to communicate in a second language. Whether the emphasis is on speaking, listening, reading or writing, everything we teach is organized to help you achieve this goal. Naturally we also teach grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary but we do so in order for you to be able to use the language. Our classes are organized by level and into small groups (12 max) so there is maximum opportunity for you to learn effectively. We have found over the years that the confidence gained in a small group, where you have plenty of opportunity to practice, is key to successful learning. Naturally in a Japanese class we also have to address the writing conventions and learning how to write and read the characters forms a central part of the course. This is usually one of the parts of the course students enjoy most – the characters can become a form of art – an unexpected benefit from the classes. We use materials especially prepared by the teachers for teaching Japanese alongside different commercially produced text books to give you the right kind of support for learning. The teachers are, as you would expect, all native speakers of Japanese and have been trained to teach Japanese as a Foreign Language. As well as work in the class we will give you recommendations about how to improve your Japanese skills in London – where to shop, eat or relax in a Japanese environment!
We will help you to choose the most appropriate class for you – if you have studied the language then it is important to make sure you are in the right place and we will do this through a level assessment – give us a call on 02070793334 to discuss or to arrange to come in and talk to us.
One of the best ways to improve your Japanese is to study in Japan – find out how to find a good Japanese School.

When you choose to do a course with us, the first thing we do is to test your level. We have classes at different levels and it is vital you are in the right place for the most effective learning.
Our classes are organised into the following levels
Beginners
Beginners Plus
Elementary
Pre Intermediate
Intermediate
Upper Intermediate
Advanced
Proficiency
You can see how the syllabus is constructed by following the link to syllabus and in many cases this will give you a good idea before you start. Our levels are also mapped onto the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages which will give you a detailed list of the kinds of things you should be able to do at different levels.
For non-European languages the situation is a bit more complicated, as well as the normal spoken language (introductions, talking about yourself, etc) we will need to know other more specific things. For Chinese we will need to know whether you have learned the pinyin (the 4 tones in Mandarin) and for Japanese the Hiragana (one of the writing systems in Japanese). In Japanese this will be followed at higher levels by learning the Katakana and then the Kanji.
Obviously if you are a beginner the situation is not very complicated. One of the most common questions we are asked about level is form people who studied in the past – maybe GCSE at school several years ago- and to find that level really depends on what has happened since then. It might be the case that a grade C at GCSE 10 years ago means a beginners’ class is best while an A 2 years ago might mean a higher level. Our classes are mainly communicative so there is an emphasis on speaking. This is not always matched by experience of having learned a language at school.
At the moment we are developing an online level test which we hope to have in place during the early part of 2011 but mean while we are always happy to talk to you on the phone or in person to assess your level without any commitment. Just give us a call.
