The fascination we have with Italy - the culture, the food and the country make learning this wonderful language such a good idea. It’s also probably one of the easiest of the modern languages to get to grips with. As with the other languages we teach, our students have all sorts of different reasons for wanting to learn Italian – so whether it’s business or holidays, or just an interest in the fantastically diverse culture that Italy offers it is always going to be a popular choice. Travelling to Italy and visiting some of the world’s great cities – Rome, Florence, Milan - and of course once there dipping into whichever part of the culture you find interesting – food, fashion, football, ice cream ! is much easier and give a much more rewarding experience if you know some of the local language. Italian continues to be one of the most popular courses we run.
Language schools are not really any different from any educational institution – a good place to learn is one where there are good facilities, a well organized syllabus and teachers who can motivate and inspire you. UIC is a Language School where you are provided with all these things. Our management have been involved in teaching English as a foreign language for over 30 years and have been able to bring the best things from that experience to teaching Foreign Languages. Our foreign language classes have been growing at a rapid rate over the last few years – from a handful of classes to over 400 students a week learning languages, all testament to the effective way we plan and deliver our classes. So, what do we do in class? Communication is the key to all we do. Using up to date materials and of course the internet as a resource for our classes, alongside more traditional materials and exercises our teachers are able to provide an appropriate balance for your learning experience, and this has been very successful. We know many people have had poor language learning experiences at school, or perhaps tried unsuccessfully to learn on their own; we have organized things to try and put that right. It’s never easy to learn a language but there is no doubt there are good and no so good ways of doing it. A maximum of 12 students per class gives plenty of opportunity to practice and also for the teacher to help and correct. Homework and self study are an important part of the process.

SYLLABUS ITALIAN
At UIC we base our language syllabus on the Common European Framework for languages.
The CEFR is a part of the work of the Council of Europe and was established in the 1950’s with the aim of the “democratisation of language learning for the mobility of persons and ideas, and on the promotion of the European heritage of cultural and linguistic diversity” In practice that means you should be able to do the same kinds of things in different languages at the same level. Each level in our syllabus is subdivided into Communicative Objectives, Topics and Vocabulary and Grammar. The Italian language syllabus is based on the ‘Espresso’ series of books.

We offer calsses at several different levels; if you're not sure which is the best evel for you you cna either do our online test or come in and see us for an assessment. When you choose to do a course with us, the first thing we do is to test your level. We have classes at different levels and it is vital you are in the right place for the most effective learning.
Our classes are organised into the following levels
Beginners
Beginners Plus
Elementary
Pre Intermediate
Intermediate
Upper Intermediate
Advanced
Proficiency
You can see how the syllabus is constructed by following the link to syllabus and in many cases this will give you a good idea before you start. Our levels are also mapped onto the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages which will give you a detailed list of the kinds of things you should be able to do at different levels.
For non-European languages the situation is a bit more complicated, as well as the normal spoken language (introductions, talking about yourself, etc) we will need to know other more specific things. For Chinese we will need to know whether you have learned the pinyin (the 4 tones in Mandarin) and for Japanese the Hiragana (one of the writing systems in Japanese). In Japanese this will be followed at higher levels by learning the Katakana and then the Kanji.
Obviously if you are a beginner the situation is not very complicated. One of the most common questions we are asked about level is form people who studied in the past – maybe GCSE at school several years ago- and to find that level really depends on what has happened since then. It might be the case that a grade C at GCSE 10 years ago means a beginners’ class is best while an A 2 years ago might mean a higher level. Our classes are mainly communicative so there is an emphasis on speaking. This is not always matched by experience of having learned a language at school.
At the moment we are developing an online level test which we hope to have in place during the early part of 2011 but mean while we are always happy to talk to you on the phone or in person to assess your level without any commitment. Just give us a call.
