Many of our language students will have come across German at school – after all it is the 2nd most commonly taught language at schools in the UK. Last year just over 65000 students took a German GCSE which although a 55% drop on 2002 still shows a good number continuing with a subject which is no longer compulsory at school after age 14. As well as in Germany, German is spoken in much of Switzerland, Austria and Lichtenstein and it is still common as a 2nd language in many countries in Eastern Europe. So, for travel across much of Europe and even the ex-Soviet countries it is still one of the most useful languages to know. Germany is one of the major trade partners with the UK (and in non-English speaking countries still way above all other countries apart form France). So there is still a huge demand from employers for German and of course speaking some German makes it much easier for you to travel there and visit some of the fascinating things in this country. Whether it’s culture or nature you’ll be sure to find something to fit the bill.
Plenty of speaking practice with teachers who are trained properly and who understand as native speakers the language they are teaching is, in our experience, the key to successful language learning. At our Language School we select our teachers very carefully and we are demanding in what we expect them to do – after all we know that learning a language is not an easy thing and we know our job is to work closely with you to help you achieve your own goals. Whatever your reasons we have the courses to help you. We have plenty of experience in designing courses as we are a year round Language school – teaching 7 different languages to people from all around the world. Our modern languages department has grown at a rapid rate over the last few years and we are sure this is a combination of an increasing demand for languages and our ability to help you learn effectively. We use modern methods and a range of resources from the internet to text books and the books also form the basis of work we expect you to do at home. Learning a language is not magic – it must involve you; our expertise is in helping you to stay interested through the design of the classes and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the teachers. Learning how to successfully communicate in a second language is behind all our course design.
Most of the classes we offer are at beginners level but if you are more advanced then just call and we will help you decide which would be the best class for you to study in. We are available during the day and also in the evenings Monday – Thursday – 02070793334

German is the second most commonly taught language at schools in the UK. As well as in Germany, German is spoken in much of Switzerland, Austria and Lichtenstein and it is still common as a 2nd language in many countries in Eastern Europe. Germany is one of the major trade partners with the UK (and in non-English speaking countries still way above all other countries apart from France). When you choose to do a course with us, the first thing we do is to test your level. We have classes at different levels and it is vital you are in the right place for the most effective learning.
Our classes are organised into the following levels
Beginners
Beginners Plus
Elementary
Pre Intermediate
Intermediate
Upper Intermediate
Advanced
Proficiency
You can see how the syllabus is constructed by following the link to syllabus and in many cases this will give you a good idea before you start. Our levels are also mapped onto the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages which will give you a detailed list of the kinds of things you should be able to do at different levels.
For non-European languages the situation is a bit more complicated, as well as the normal spoken language (introductions, talking about yourself, etc) we will need to know other more specific things. For Chinese we will need to know whether you have learned the pinyin (the 4 tones in Mandarin) and for Japanese the Hiragana (one of the writing systems in Japanese). In Japanese this will be followed at higher levels by learning the Katakana and then the Kanji.
Obviously if you are a beginner the situation is not very complicated. One of the most common questions we are asked about level is form people who studied in the past – maybe GCSE at school several years ago- and to find that level really depends on what has happened since then. It might be the case that a grade C at GCSE 10 years ago means a beginners’ class is best while an A 2 years ago might mean a higher level. Our classes are mainly communicative so there is an emphasis on speaking. This is not always matched by experience of having learned a language at school.
At the moment we are developing an online level test which we hope to have in place during the early part of 2011 but mean while we are always happy to talk to you on the phone or in person to assess your level without any commitment. Just give us a call.
