The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination is designed for students who wish to study in an English-speaking university or college. The IELTS course prepares students for this examination and also develops their study skills. The course is aimed at students at Upper Intermediate level and above.

Although there are both General and Academic modules, we focus on the Academic one. This consists of papers in reading, writing, listening and speaking. the IELTS course focuses particularly on developing these skills, rather than on giving structural input.

Most UK Universities require an overall IELTS score of between 5.5 and 7.5 depending on the subject chosen. The maximum score for each paper is 9.0. Candidates achieving an overall band score of 6.0 are regarded as competent users of the language and a score of 9.0 as expert users. A minimum overall band score of 6.0 is therefore recommended to candidates seeking entry to an undergraduate degree course in an English speaking university or college.

We are also the only school in the world ever to win both the Star Award (voted on by travel agents world wide) and the British Council Award for Innovation in language teaching.

The course is taught over 4 weeks. Classes are every day, Monday-Friday from 13.40 - 17.00 This is 3 x 60 minute classes per day. Occasionally the course is taught in the morning.

This course prepares you to take the IELTS exam which is often used as a guide for further study at university in the UK. It is very important for us to make sure you are in the right class from the beginning and we spend some time on your first day both testing you and talking to you about your aims and target grade. The level test is grammar, writing and spoken to give us the best idea of your different skills.

You will be given regular tests and tutorials in your class and guidance on how to be successful. There are different ways of measuring progress and predicting where you will be in a certain number of weeks. Almost all of our students make faster progress than the average. Our exam pass rate is above the national average as well. If you would like more information about how much progress you can expect and what grade we think you might be able to achieve, please just ask us.

Learning a language is in many ways just like learning anything, it is best done if you have a teacher who has the experience, skills and resources to help you. At UIC we have the experience to help you achieve your goals - the teachers who work on these courses have experience both as teachers and as teacher trainers and can help you continue with your professional development.
