If you want to learn Japanese to understand more about the culture of the country or if you want to learn or improve your Japanese for business or professional reasons, UIC will be able to help you. Japanese is one of the most popular languages we teach and as with all our languages we work very closely with you to provide the right kind of learning experience. We also keep in touch with you during your time with us to make sure you are benefitting form your course. With classes this is mainly through the teachers, with corporate or individual clients it is more formal and will take the form of regular organised feedback. We have small group courses with a maximum of 12 people in each class through to individual tuition in Japanese for specific purposes. In terms of doing business in Japan any knowledge of the language will be an advantage - and whether you want Japanese for a detailed meeting or for socialising with your partners, we can get you there.
Most people who join our classes in our Language School simply want to know how to communicate better in a second language. Whether the emphasis is on speaking, listening, reading or writing, everything we teach is organized to help you achieve this goal. Naturally we also teach grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary but we do so in order for you to be able to use the language. Our group classes are organised by level and into small groups so there is maximum opportunity for you to learn effectively.

Japan has long been the economic powerhouse of the world and although those days may be coming to an end there is still an enormous amount of business done with Japan and still a huge advantage to be gained by anyone who knows some Japanese. Japan has so many faces – the imperial history, the geisha and the samurai, the art and fashion and the modern world of neon, electronics and bullet trains, not to mention the beautiful and sometimes astonishing countryside. As in all countries there is also a more hidden side to Japan and it is only by visiting and spending a little time there that you can really get a glimpse of that. As with all the languages we teach students come to us for all sorts of reasons - business, travel or the culture and those planning to visit Japan can only benefit from taking a language course.
We will help you to choose the most appropriate class for you – if you have studied the language then it is important to make sure you are in the right place and we will do this through a level assessment – give us a call on 0207 307 1980 to discuss or to arrange to come in and talk to us.
One of the best ways to improve your Japanese is to study in Japan – find out how to find a good Japanese School by calling us.
Please note the minimum age for our Foreign Language courses is 18 unless otherwise notified

When you choose to do a course with us, the first thing we do is to test your level. We have classes at different levels and it is vital you are in the right place for the most effective learning.
Our classes are organised into the following levels
Beginners
Beginners Plus
Elementary
Pre Intermediate
Intermediate
Upper Intermediate
Advanced
Proficiency
You can see how the syllabus is constructed by following the link to syllabus and in many cases this will give you a good idea before you start. Our levels are also mapped onto the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages which will give you a detailed list of the kinds of things you should be able to do at different levels.
For non-European languages the situation is a bit more complicated, as well as the normal spoken language (introductions, talking about yourself, etc) we will need to know other more specific things. For Chinese we will need to know whether you have learned the pinyin (the 4 tones in Mandarin) and for Japanese the Hiragana (one of the writing systems in Japanese). In Japanese this will be followed at higher levels by learning the Katakana and then the Kanji.
Obviously if you are a beginner the situation is not very complicated. One of the most common questions we are asked about level is from people who studied in the past – maybe GCSE at school several years ago- and to find that level really depends on what has happened since then. It might be the case that a grade C at GCSE 10 years ago means a beginners’ class is best while an A 2 years ago might mean a higher level. Our classes are mainly communicative so there is an emphasis on speaking. This is not always matched by experience of having learned a language at school.
Please try our online tests or if you'd prefer to talk to us about your level please call - 0207 307 1980.
