French Language Courses

Although the numbers of people using French may not be what they once were – in the middle ages for example it was the ‘official’ court and legal language in England, French is still widely spoken throughout the world – by something over 80 million people. In countries from Vietnam to the Ivory Coast to Togo you will still be able to speak and do business in French, and in France, Belgium and Switzerland you may have no choice! Of course many of us in the UK will remember learning French at school – it is still by a long way the most commonly taught language at GCSE – but sadly for many of us that may  have been an experience that put us of learning French rather than encouraging us to embrace languages. Also, being so close to the UK and having a developed and growing economy it is one of the UK’s important trade partners. So, whatever the reason, whether it’s a holiday, business, to learn what you didn’t at school or just for the pleasure of learning a language we can give you the opportunity to embark on that challenge. .

UIC is a specialist Language School. We are effectively a French School in London where you can learn from the beginning or improve with our wide choice of French language courses. Lessons include a balance of conversation, listening, pronunciation, grammar which will help you survive and communicate in everyday situations in French speaking countries. With the aid of a text book, the syllabus aims to provide useful, relevant language using up-to-date and interesting materials, as well as encouraging participants to practice the language to help confidence and develop fluency. We use an interactive method of teaching based on learning by practising. This means that grammar is covered as much as possible by using practical situations, so speaking and actively using the language is central. Successfully implementing the interactive method depends on the personal attention your teacher is able to give you and to make sure we can maximize this we have groups which never have more than twelve students. A large part of the study material is presented in the form of practical activities and exercises through which you will learn to understand and speak French almost without noticing. In class, we make use of videos and other audio-visual materials including the internet. Naturally you will also be set weekly homework. Our standard French courses are 10 weeks, 2 hours once a week. As with all our language courses we also offer individual tuition for those students who have more specific language learning goals and catch-up lessons if you have tom miss a class for any reason.

We have classes at several different levels – you can check in the SYLLABUS section to see what we cover at each of the different levels or just call us to talk about your language learning history. We are in the office every day after 10.30 are able to assess your level in person and often on the phone - 02070793334

Languages Test

When you choose to do a course with us, the first thing we do is to test your level. We have classes at different levels and it is vital you are in the right place for the most effective learning.

Our classes are organised into the following levels

Beginners

Beginners Plus

Elementary

Pre Intermediate

Intermediate

Upper Intermediate

Advanced

Proficiency

You can see how the syllabus is constructed by following the link to syllabus and in many cases this will give you a good idea before you start. Our levels are also mapped onto the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages which will give you a detailed list of the kinds of things you should be able to do at different levels.

For non-European languages the situation is a bit more complicated, as well as the normal spoken language (introductions, talking about yourself, etc) we will need to know other more specific things. For Chinese we will need to know whether you have learned the pinyin (the 4 tones in Mandarin) and for Japanese the Hiragana (one of the writing systems in Japanese). In Japanese this will be followed at higher levels by learning the Katakana and then the Kanji.

Obviously if you are a beginner the situation is not very complicated. One of the most common questions we are asked about level is form people who studied in the past – maybe GCSE at school several years ago- and to find that level really depends on what has happened since then. It might be the case that a grade C at GCSE 10 years ago means a beginners’ class is best while an A 2 years ago might mean a higher level. Our classes are mainly communicative so there is an emphasis on speaking. This is not always matched by experience of having learned a language at school.

At the moment we are developing an online level test which we hope to have in place during the early part of 2011 but mean while we are always happy to talk to you on the phone or in person to assess your level without any commitment. Just give us a call.
