This Saturday sees the annual PRIDE celebrations in London. Pride is an organisation campaigning for rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people (LGBT). In the last 2 weeks there have been numerous celebrations and activities all aimed at promoting diversity and equality. The Pride website has all the details but describes itself as an organisation that “aims to promote equality and diversity through all of its campaigns.” They go onto say ” The two week Pride festival uses theatre, music, debate, art and entertainment to raise awareness of discrimination and the issues and difficulties affecting the lives of LGBT people around the world. Our Parade is an explosion of Pride in the heart of the capital, attracting over 1,000,000 people in a celebration of diversity. Through this we aim to promote a sentiment in favour of equality, uniting people in a celebrative atmosphere where all are welcome, and fostering a sense of community within the LGBT population. Overall, Pride London hopes to promote understanding and cooperation, as well as education in diversity, in order to get rid of the discrimination faced by LGBT people.” Pride operates throughout the year – campaigning, raising awareness and raising funds as well. This festival culminates this Saturday in a huge march and concert – if you’re around in London then it really is one of the most spectacular things to see and join in – whatever your sexuality! Everyone is welcome.
The parade goes from near Baker Street to near Parliament, past Trafalgar Square – click this link if you want to see a map. It starts in the morning – but do go and watch or take part. It’s become one of London’s highlights over the last few years. The concert is in Trafalgar Square – there will be performances and music as well. So, meet up with your friends at UIC and go along.
