We would like to say thank you for keeping up your studies at UIC, making it on time in the mornings, coming to school when there was very hot or very cold weather and joining our UIC Social Programme on so many afternoons.

You studied very hard this year – well done!! We hope you will improve your English even more in the New Year. If you want to continue your English practice over the holidays, there is a very easy way: simply log in to your Guided E-Learning account!

Paralympic Torch passes by UIC!

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

This morning UIC students were lucky to have a fantastic view as the Paralympic Torch passed by  metres away from the school on Regent’s Street.  The torch was on the final part of its journey to the Olympic Stadium, where the Games will open tonight.  Lots of cheering, clapping and excitement from UIC students!

Good & Bad Holidays

Monday, June 4th, 2012

One of our Intermediate classes was asked to write about a dream holiday or a ‘holiday from Hell’ that they had in the past. Here are two of them; one of each.

This time, instead of just reading the stories, why not try to correct them? You can be the teacher.

I’ll help you by putting the errors in colour; Purple means that this word or phrase is wrong and should be changed.  Orange
means ‘it’s not wrong but we wouldn’t say it like that’. Can you express this better?

Check your ideas next week. I will show the ‘perfect’ version and WHY it’s right.

HOLIDAY FROM HELL
One night, we went to the club in Sin-sa-Dong, Korea. When we finally got together, two friends of mine knew that they didn’t bring an identity card. In Korea, we never get into a club without it. So three of my friends went to a bar to drink something and one of my friends and I got into the club and dance so exciting. When we go crazy with the electro music, my phone rang and my friends said; “We don’t have any money, please come here”.

I went to the bar where my friends are in and solved the problem of money.

The most terrible  thing of the day is a situation that my friends missed their baggage. So, we had to wait for the closing of the club and found our stuff from there. It was a really catastrophe good-bye party.

DREAM HOLIDAY
I went to Egypt. It was the most beautiful holiday ever. I went to Cairo and then to Sharm-EL-Sheikh and back to Cairo. In Cairo I met my family that I hadn’t seen for ages and, of course, I visited the Pyramids and other pharaonic things. Afterwards, I went to Sharm-El-Sheikh where they have one of the most beautiful sea and nightlife. I staied here about 1 week, the weather was amazing (as usual in Egypt). Once the week finally finished, I went back home and had great moments with my family. I also had a lot of fun going out  with my cousins. The last day I did some shopping for Switzerland and I finally get back the day after.

My favourite film

Monday, May 28th, 2012

One of my most favourite films is Harry Potter. I like this film because I like watching fantasy films a lot. When I was a junior high school student, I watched Harry Potter in the cinema for the first time.  Since I was a little girl I have been longing for a fantasy stories. For example when I was a child I watched a lot of cartoons on T.V. Some of them about witches who have a stick or ride brooms. Sometimes about an invisible person. After Watching Harry Potter, every time I thought that there is a real world like that with real witches.

Harry Potter is a long story with different parts so I can’t choose which film I like most. Since the films have all been finished I am very sad but I hope one day I can watch them once again.

Is it better to live in a big city or the country?

Monday, May 28th, 2012

Life in the big cites is very different from life in a village. In both cases there are advantages and disadvantages.

First I would like to consider life in a city. In a big city we can find good arrangements for education. Cities also provide ample medical facilities therefore its easy to find good hospitals. Besides  this, cities also provide many opportunities for recreation and fun. There are many cinemas and theatres and clubs for the nightlife.

On the other hand, life in the city can be unhealthy because of the pollution and bad habits; also it is difficult to enjoy the beauties of nature.

The country lifestyle is much more relaxed than the city lifestyle. The environment in the country is healthier. There is less pollutions and less noise. What’s more, the people in the country sometimes are friendlier towards others.

You may be better suited to one type of life style than that of another. It’s a choice made by people based on their personality.
